Location: We are currently open in New York and Los Angeles and will be expanding to additional American cities in the next few months. We encourage any candidates living in a major United States city to apply.

The Company

The Plum Guide is on a mission is to build the definitive collection of the world’s best homes. Through expert human curation and innovative tech, we’re taking a scientific and systematic approach to vetting every home in every city we open, and accepting only the top 1%. Like a modern Michelin Guide - but for homes.

We launched 3 years ago in London. Since then, we have grown 15-20% month on month; expanded to 6 cities; tested over 100,000 homes; developed a customer experience that’s returning the highest NPS scores in the hospitality sector; and are on track to reach over £25M in annualised sales.

We are backed by some of the world’s top VCs and angel investors who have built many of the world’s most exciting companies of today. These include TransferWise, Citymapper, BuzzFeed, Appear Here, Graze, Depop, SoFarSounds, Marvel, GymBox, Threads, Second Home, Zoopla, LoveFilm, Secret Escapes and many more.

We’ve just closed a £14m Series B round of funding. Our focus for the next 12 months is on building an exceptional brand & customer experience; and maintaining hyper growth through an accelerated global rollout. 

This is where you come in.

The Role 

Home Critics are Plum’s superheroes. They put every home and host that applies to Plum, through the Plum Home Test. This is how we guarantee the quality of every home in the Collection. 

This is a freelance position. Most Home Critics do between 4 and 10 tests a week (depending on the size of the home and the Home Critic’s availability). 

We are looking for Home Critics who are able to commit long term. 

What you’ll be up to

You will be asked to visit and test the most beautiful vacation homes in your city. Each test will include: 

  • Interviewing the hosts of these homes and making sure they’re up to Plum’s hospitality standards. 

  • Meticulously collecting over 150 pieces of information about each home and recording this information in our Test Document. This includes things like shower height and pressure, bed sheet thread-count, noise decibel levels, and wifi signal. 

  • Assessing the design and and ‘feel’ of the home, using our extensive Design Manifesto.

  • Creating a floor plan, using the app ‘Magicplan’, installed on a tablet.  

  • Giving the Plum Guide photographer guidance on what features to capture during the photoshoot. 

  • Writing a 100 summary of the home for our team, with your recommendation on whether it should be listed on The Plum Guide website.  

  • Identifying and writing the home highlights and home truths and creating area recommendations (restaurants, cafes, attractions etc.) nearby.

  • A design enthusiast: you can spot flat-packed furniture from a mile away and know your Eames from your Arne Jacobsen.  

  • Passionate about hospitality: you know what makes exceptional service and believe that guests deserve the very best. 

  • Empathetic and attentive to detail: you can put yourself in the shoes of a Plum guest and pick up on all the details that might make or break their stay - unresponsive hosts, stains on the carpet, mould in the corner of the bathroom, unsuitable toiletries. 

  • Committed: you can commit at least 15 hours per week and can commit long term. 

  • Efficient: you have high standards but can get the job done quickly - we have ambitious growth targets and need home critics to submit their tests on time. 

  • Punctual: you’re organized and always on time for appointments and meetings. 

  • Good with people: you’re a people-person and find meeting and getting to know new people easy - you regularly get told you make a great first impression.

  • A good writer in English: while you don’t need to be an excellent copywriter, we are looking for Home Critics who are able to write in descriptive detail about homes or travel experiences, to communicate to our HQ team whether a home should pass or not. 

  • A tablet owner: you own a tablet (or are prepared to purchase one for the job) which has a gyro sensor and is compatible with the app ‘Magicplan’.
